September at Horkans: Kickstarting the Autumn Season.

Posted by Paraic Horkan

September is nature’s time for renewal; a wonderful season to sow, feed, and ready your garden for spring. With a little nurturing this month, you’ll ensure your garden brims with colour and life through autumn and into next spring. Let Paraic guide your way.

Lawn Care

  • Remove moss now with Zero Lawn Moss; it starts working overnight.
  • Feed lawn 24 hours later using Zero Lawn Feed for nourishing growth and moss prevention.
  • Reseed bare patches or sow a new lawn with Green Velvet lawn seed; ideal while the ground’s still warm.

Sow & Grow

  • Sow seeds of edibles and flowers now; pop into compost, cover with cling film, and replant when they shoot.
  • Plant Japanese onion sets for early spring shoots and full bulbs come April–May.
  • Plant autumn and winter veggies like winter cabbage, Chinese cabbage, purple sprouting broccoli, lettuce, and iceberg lettuce.
  • Add berrying trees like Malus (crabapple) now; colourful berries in autumn and beautiful blossoms in spring, plus great for wildlife.

Garden Care

Control algae and moss on hard surfaces with PAC; apply on a dry, calm day and see it vanish in 7 days.

Before

After

Apply through a watering can or pressure sprayer on a dry calm day to the hard surface area and watch the moss and algae disappear in no time.

Add Some Garden Colour

  • Start a wildflower patch; September is ideal for sowing seeds or bulbs for spring and summer blooms.
  • Plant winter-flowering cyclamen, pansies, violas, heather, and aconites in pots and window boxes for early seasonal colour.
  • Add evergreen climbers: virginia creeper, hydrangea, honeysuckle, ivies; to brighten garden with foliage and blooms.
  • Propagate shrubs by taking pencil-length cuttings, dipping in rooting powder, planting in perlite mix, and covering with polythene to root on a bright window sill.

Wild Garden Birds

  • Feed your feathered friends with high-energy options: sunflower seeds, fat balls, wild bird mixes; to help them build reserves for winter.
  • Clean out old nests from nesting boxes now, ready for future use.

Why These Actions Matter

  • A moss-free, fed lawn now sets you up for lush green grass next spring.
  • Sowing and planting today builds your harvest and displays for winter and beyond.
  • Adding climbers and wildflowers keeps your garden rich in colour and buzzing with wildlife.
  • Nourishing the birds supports nature in your garden; what a joy to watch them through the colder months.
