October at Horkans: Getting Prepared for the Coming Winter.

Posted by Paraic Horkan

What can we do to keep our gardens looking their best in October? As we reach the tail-end of October, the garden shifts once more. The air is cooler, the winds stronger, and the time is right for planting, protecting, and preparing. Whether you're lifting perennials, storing fruit, or just keeping things tidy, here are our top seasonal tips to keep your garden in great shape.” - Paraic

Grow Your Own

  • Harvest any remaining fruit from apple, pear, and plum trees – store in a cool, dark, frost-free spot to keep them longer.
  • Keep an eye on stored produce through winter to avoid spoilage and enjoy your harvest well into the season.

Protect & Maintain

  • Tidy up borders and gather fallen leaves: great for making your own compost. Use Garotta compost maker to speed things along.
  • Check that tree stakes are still secure; wind-rock can seriously damage young trees.
  • In exposed areas, consider adding Shelter Net; it helps reduce wind pressure on young trees and shrubs.
  • With colder nights setting in, have some plant fleece ready; simply drape over delicate plants when frost is forecast.

Flowers & Colour

  • It’s a great time to lift and divide perennials to increase your stock. Avoid doing this in very dry weather.
  • Still have spring bulbs left? Get them planted now! Pair with wildflowers for a colourful, long-lasting display come spring. Ask Leonie in-store for the best combinations.
  • In exposed areas, consider adding Shelter Net; it helps reduce wind pressure on young trees and shrubs.
  • Haven’t freshened up your pots? Consider a mix of pansies, violas, or heather to carry you into winter.

Planting for Protection & Wildlife

  • Autumn winds are here: why not plant a mixed hedge for shelter, privacy, and year-round interest?
  • Choose laurel for fast cover, holly for berries and wildlife, or combine both for a rich, textured look.
  • We have a full selection of instant hedging, up to 8ft high; a great way to make an impact fast!

Why It Matters This Month

  • Fruit left too long on trees may spoil; better harvested and stored properly.
  • A tidy garden now means fewer pests and less stress come spring.
  • Tree care and sheltering now helps roots establish safely before winter gales arrive.
  • Bulbs and perennials planted now will reward you with a burst of colour next year.
  • Thoughtful planting, like hedging, adds structure and attracts wildlife all year round.
  • Pop into the garden centre; we’ve everything from Garotta and fleece, to instant hedging and spring bulbs.
