July Gardening Tips

Sow for Next Year

July is the perfect time to sow spring-flowering favourites such as Sweet William, Foxgloves, Forget-Me-Nots, Wallflowers and Honesty for beautiful displays next year.

Grow Your Own

  • Pin down strawberry runners into small pots of compost to create free plants for next season.
  • Sow quick-growing salad leaves and radishes for fresh summer harvests.
  • Plan ahead by sowing scented wallflowers and winter-flowering pansies for autumn colour.
  • Keep thirsty crops such as tomatoes, beans, courgettes, peas and pumpkins well-watered.
  • Continue feeding tomatoes and strawberries with the appropriate liquid feeds.

Keep Flowers Looking Their Best

  • Feed Dahlias, Roses and Lilies regularly for bigger, brighter blooms.
  • Cut back hardy Geraniums and Alchemilla after flowering for a second flush later in the season.
  • Take softwood cuttings from Hydrangeas, Spiraea, Cotinus and Pyracantha to create free plants.
  • Deadhead bedding plants regularly to keep flowers coming all summer long.
