Gardening Tips for February: Get Ready for Spring
Posted by Paraic Horkan
That age-old question: when does spring really begin? The experts might tell us it’s early March, or even later in the month, but gardeners know better.
For us, spring quietly tiptoes in from the 1st of February, bringing with it that first feeling of hope and possibility.
February may be the shortest month, but it’s one of the most important in the gardening year. There’s a lovely sense of awakening in the garden; buds beginning to stir, soil ready for attention, and plans starting to take shape.
It’s the perfect time to potter, catch up on small jobs, and gently prepare for the brighter days of spring and summer ahead.
This is a month of renewal and regrowth, and here are my top tips to help your garden wake up and thrive this February
Grow Your Own
- Place seed potatoes in a bright, cool, frost-free place with the shoots facing upwards.
- This gives them a strong head start, ready for planting in March.
- A simple step that leads to healthier plants and better crops later on.
February is the perfect time to begin chitting your seed potatoes.
Garden Maintenance
- Trim back climbers such as roses, honeysuckle or ivy where needed.
- Always use clean, sharp tools for neat cuts and healthy regrowth.
- We stock a great range of Kent & Stoke tools and essentials to help you get the job done properly.
Before birds begin nesting, it’s important to finish up any necessary pruning.
Moss Removal
Moss removal is an important job to focus on in February. The build up of moss during the winter can be problematic.
The thick green moss gathers on our lawns, driveways, patios and paths. Luckily, there are a range of products you can use to remove moss from your outdoor areas.
Lawn Moss - follow the Zero 2 Step Lawn Care Program - it's easy, fast & it works!
Step 1: Tackle the moss. Apply a dressing of Zero Lawn Moss. This will start to remove moss down to the roots overnight.
Step 2: 24 hours after applying Zero Lawn Moss, apply Zero Lawn Feed to green your lawn for up to 3 months and further suppress moss
Moss on patios and hard surfaces:
Treat the moss on your driveway, tarmacadam, roof tiles, fence, patio, stones, and/or bricks with PAC.
Just mix 1 part of PAC biodegradable liquid with 10 parts water and apply to the affected area. PAC will remove algae, moss, mould and/or lichen within days and the area you have cleaned will remain clean for months.
February is a very active month in the garden. We spend our time cleaning, planning and preparing.
But, with action comes reward. You must plant before you harvest and prepare before you succeed.
Invest in your garden now to reap the benefits throughout the year.
