Everything you need to know about Poinsettia's

Posted by Paraic Horkan

The poinsettia is the classic Christmas plant; bright, cheerful, and with a touch of holiday magic. With a little care, your poinsettia can brighten your home for weeks; maybe even beyond the holidays. Here’s how to get the best from yours.

Know Your Poinsettia

  • Poinsettia is botanically known as Euphorbia pulcherrima; its showy “flowers” are actually coloured leaves called bracts, with tiny yellow blooms at the centre.
  • They come in many colours; classic red, white, pink, pale green, even orange — so there’s lovely choice for every home.
  • Because poinsettias are sensitive to cold and drafts, plants grown locally in Ireland (or nearby) tend to do better; they spend less time travelling, and arrive fresher.

Ideal Home Conditions

To keep a poinsettia looking bright and healthy indoors:

  • Temperature: Keep in a steady room-temperature environment; ideally between 16 °C and 22 °C. Avoid fireplaces, radiators, or cold draughts from windows/doors.
  • Light: Give it bright, indirect light; but avoid harsh direct sun. A well-lit room or near a window (not on the sill if very cold outside) is ideal.
  • Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, but never water-logged; let the top layer dry before watering again. Good drainage is essential.
  • Humidity / Stability: Poinsettias dislike extremes; avoid moving them around frequently, and keep away from cold drafts or sudden temperature drops.

Watering & Feeding Tips

  • Check soil moisture by touch or pot weight; water only when the surface feels dry. Over-watering or letting roots sit in water can cause root-rot.
  • When you do water, use tepid/lukewarm water; cold water can shock the plant.
  • During its festive display, feeding isn’t strictly necessary. If you hope to keep your poinsettia year-round, resume liquid feeding monthly once new growth appears.

After Christmas: Can It Last Longer?

If you’d like your poinsettia to survive beyond the holidays (and maybe rebloom next year):

  • After blooms fade, trim back the stems down to ~25-30 cm.
  • Keep in a bright, consistent-temperature spot indoors; gradually reduce watering as the plant enters a rest-phase.
  • From around mid-September next year, move to a darker spot for 12 hours daily (e.g. cupboard or dark room) to trigger the signal for bracts to colour; this helps bring back the festive red foliage.
  • It takes a little effort; but many gardeners find it rewarding to see their poinsettia return to full glory next Christmas.

Decorating & Gifting Ideas (Poinsettia-Style)

  • Poinsettias make an elegant indoor centrepiece; their vivid bracts bring instant festive cheer.
  • Combine with decorative pots, seasonal foliage, or fairy lights for a classy Christmas display.
  • They also make thoughtful gifts. If shipping or travelling with them, wrap gently to protect from drafts and cold exposure.

Quick Dos & Don’ts

✔ Do:

  • Keep in a stable, warm room away from drafts and direct heat.
  • Water carefully; soil damp but well-draining.
  • Give bright, indirect light.

✘ Don’t:

  • Place near cold windows, fireplaces, or doors where temperature swings.
  • Let soil stay soggy or let roots stand in water.
  • Expect it to thrive outdoors during winter in Ireland; it’s a houseplant and needs protection.
